Nokia launched today AirFrame Open Edge Server, the Edge Cloud data center solution for the 5G tenure. While preparing ahead, it is dedicated to meeting the data processing demands of Cloud RAN and fuelling advanced applications for users and industries based on the next-gen wireless technology.
The new open edge cloud infrastructure is a part of the Nokia AirFrame portfolio. This portfolio provides a layered network architecture that will optimize performance and operator costs while suiting with the 5G technology.
While Cloud RAN can offer ultra-low latency and massive data throughput for 5G (Nokia points out), it needs the support of the ” open edge” infrastructure, a “highly efficient cloud infrastructure solution.” The solution possesses an ultra-compact design good enough to deploy at base station sites.
Besides meeting the most stringent end-customer data demands, it will as well let operators.
optimize network resources and intelligently distribute workload across the network, based on the type of data traffic as well as latency and throughput needs
The infrastructure comes with a real-time, Open Platform for NFV (OPNFV)-compatible, OpenStack distribution. It is designed to run in small data centers but provides expected qualitative performance.
Additionally, cloud-wise services and Cloud Collaboration Hubs of Nokia will support operators in fruitfully planning and executing edge cloud deployments. The Open Edge infrastructure solution will start shipping in the third quarter of this year.
