Nokia Achieved Sustainability By Reducing Network Power Consumption With PSE-6s

Researchers at Cignal.ai predicted that network capacity deployed using coherent optics is anticipated to increase at a rate of over 40% per year over the next four years, driven by more network connections, greater bandwidth speeds, and new applications.

“Coherent interfaces are close to reaching the theoretical maximum capacity of fiber.” “But successive generations continue to provide tremendous value by transporting more data per wavelength, improving energy efficiency, and supporting the latest Ethernet rates,” said Kyle Hollasch, lead analyst at Cignal AI, Optical, and Packet.

However, in a bid to reduce network power consumption and improve energy efficiency, Nokia today officially announced the launch of its sixth-generation super-coherent photonic service engine, the PSE-6s, which is capable of reducing network power consumption by 60 percent.

“The PSE-6s bring these advances to Nokia’s broad portfolio of optical networking platforms with support for terabit wavelengths, multi-terabit line cards, and 800 GE rates over distance – all while reducing power per bit,” Kyle Hollasch added.

Reducing Network Power Consumption With PSE-6s

Nokia’s PSE-6s optical engines support a unique chip-to-chip interface that enables them to be deployed in pairs to power the industry’s first 2.4Tb/s coherent transport solution. This enables network operators to efficiently carry any mix of 400 and 800 GE high-speed client services.

PSE-6s-enabled devices provide the carriage of 800 GE services in metro and data center interconnect (DCI) applications, with a reach of 2,000 km and beyond, via long-haul networks and transoceanic cables, and with a threefold boost in performance.

James Watt, Vice President of Nokia Optical Networks, explains that PSE-6s are designed to make scaling simple and are available as an upgrade across Nokia’s portfolio.

Powerful enough to redefine the frontier of coherent transport, it’s nevertheless simple to deploy, so network operators can take immediate advantage of its scale and performance capabilities. What’s more, these benefits come with the lower power consumption per bit, resulting in a better TCO, as well as helping operators meet increasingly aggressive carbon reduction targets.”

Achieving Sustainability With Nokia’s PSE-6s

Providing Efficient Means to Scale Bandwidth

Cicero Olivieri, Vice President of Engineering and CTO at V.Tal, said Nokia’s PSE-6s are providing an efficient means to scale bandwidth as well as lowering power consumption.

“We are excited with the potential of Nokia’s PSE-6s to provide efficient means to scale bandwidth, while also lowering power consumption, which is essential to meet our ESG commitments.”

PSE-6s tightly integrate the latest generation of 5 nm coherent digital signal processors (DSPs) with Nokia’s CSTAR silicon photonics. The PSE-6s, which operate at 130 Gbaud, provide up to 1.2 Tb/s of capacity per wavelength for the next generation of coherent transport.

To update their networks to PSE-6s across the 1830 family of optical networking platforms, including the 1830 PSS, 1830 PSI-M, and 1830 PSS-x, network operators can use current ITU-T WDM channel plans.

The PSE-6s provides the effective delivery of high-speed services, including 800 Gigabit Ethernet (GE), over distances of 2,000 km and beyond. It is the engine driving the expansion of Nokia’s optical transport offering. PSE-6s will debut at MWC 2023 in Barcelona and then once more at OFC in San Diego the following month.
