According to today’s official press release, January 29, Nokia introduced its new ReefShark chipsets that will vastly scale up the performance offerings of 5G network. This is made possible by the innovations of Nokia Bell Lab AI and the company’s ‘extensive capabilities’ in developing antennae for mobiles and base stations.
The Nokia ReefShark chipsets contain advanced silicon technology that was developed by Nokia in Espoo, Oulu, and Tampere of Finland, and Sunnyvale of California, USA. These chipsets can enormously reduce the network’s cost, size, and power consumption while meeting the requirements of massive computation and radio for 5G network.
The press release further informs us that the new chipsets of Nokia are presently being operated by 30 operators; the shipment will begin in the 3rd quarter of 2018. These chipsets have embedded AI capabilities, enhanced terabit AirScale technology suiting Nokia’s 5G portfolio, and Slash massive MIMO antenna systems, altogether offering heightened performance scales.
If compared with the present-day baseband units, ReefShark chipsets can deliver a 64% reduction of power consumption.
In case of computing capacity, ReefSharks can be delivered as plug-in units for the AirScale baseband module. This signature module of the Finnish company is an upgradable software for supporting full 5G functionality. The plug-in units can offer triple throughput of 28Gbps per module (which is already industry-leading), taking it to 84Gbps per module.
In addition, the baseband module chaining enables the base station throughput support for up to 6 terabits per second, meeting fast-growing densification demands and vast broadband requirements of users and devices.
By incorporating ReefShark into our network we will leverage the huge network performance improvements that will allow us to unleash the full potential of 5G. – Neil McRae, BT Chief Architect
That pretty much sums up the mammoth potential and possibilities the Nokia chipsets are bringing to match the 5G needs. We can now only wait to enjoy the performances for when it all comes alive.
With ReefShark, Nokia has created a clear competitive advantage. Its combination of power, intelligence and efficiency make it ideally suited to be at the heart of fast arriving 5G networks. – Henri Tervonen, CTO of Nokia Mobile Networks and Head of R&D Foundation
So, the brand Nokia doesn’t seem to be lost in the technology industry rather is prepping to return with premium products to match seamless 5G requirements! How cool is that, Dear Nokia fans?
