Nube Gaming Smartphone With an Extendable Gamepad

In the 1980s the first portable game computers were released, also called handhelds. Consider for example the Nintendo Game & Watch series, where one game was pre-installed as standard. In the meantime, the possibilities regarding mobile gaming are much more extensive, so the smartphone is increasingly being used to play a game. However, a touchscreen has the disadvantage that the operating options are unsatisfactory. A recently published patent shows that this can also be done differently.

Nube gaming smartphone with D-pad and joystick

Halfway through 2018, Cloud Mobile Ltd. a design patent filed with the Global Design Database of WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office). The patent was published on 23 June 2019 and consists of 16 patent sketches. The images show a modern smartphone that you can extend. Next, game buttons appear on either side, in the form of a D-pad and a joystick.

Cloud Mobile is an unknown manufacturer for me. Little is known about this company on Google either until I type in the address details mentioned in the patent. The company is based in Hong Kong and has an office in Malaga, Spain. Nube Mobile is also registered at the same address. “Nube” is the Spanish word for cloud, or Cloud (Cloud Mobile).

Nube Mobile also has its own website, which states that the company currently has two products in development. ‘A new smartphone for new players’ and a ‘new game based on one of the most popular films of the moment’.

It is likely that the product Nube Mobile talks about on its website matches the patented extendable smartphone. At first, it seems to be a normal smartphone, with a narrow bezel at the top and bottom.

The screen edges on the top and bottom are proportionally large. The special feature is that these can be pulled out. Subsequently, additional control buttons unfold on the screen’s left and right sides. It is a D-pad and a joystick.

Once extended, the device is very similar to the Nintendo Switch in handheld mode. The button layout is identical. You also have a widescreen at your disposal. The current Switch is a 6.2-inch screen with an HD resolution.

The Nube Mobile smartphone will probably have a higher resolution and possibly a larger screen. However, that has not yet begun, because Nintendo is also reported to release a new Switch handheld at the end of this year.
