It has been found that quite a few OnePlus 7 Pro 5G users are facing issues related to data connectivity and 4G fallback even with having installed Qualcomm’s current gen 5G modem Snapdragon X50.

It was claimed that the Snapdragon X50 external modem could be utilized to upgrade any 4G phone to a 5G supported unit, but the issue of network handoff renders its efficacy questionable.

When Snapdragon X50 fails to handle even legacy connections (2G and 3G), another modem has to be used alongside the former for the first generation 5G phones. For instance, using X24 LTE, which is a part of the Snapdragon 855 platform, alongside Snapdragon X50 can help give consistency to connectivity.

However, two power-draining modems have a detrimental effect on the phone battery and thus reduce phone performance.

Even though the latest OTA update for the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G indicates that OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) are working on optimizing power usage for smooth and efficient performance, reports of frequent network drop still arrive.

In the OnePlus forum, one customer complained about network issues on their OnePlus 7 Pro 5G with EE on a 5G plan and using the latest software, whereas the same SIM worked flawlessly in a 4G smartphone.

Hi all,

I have recently got my op7 pro 5g with EE on a 5g plan, however my internet data is extremely unreliable, i can hardly get any connectivity and im offline most of the time because of this.

I have spoken to EE and they seem to think there is no issues whatsoever with the network. I proved this out by putting the same sim into my OP6 and the 4g worked flawlessly and was quick.

I think my op7 pro 5g might be defective since I couldnt find this issue on XDA nor here.

I am on the latest software.

Yet another customer on the forum expressed frustration at network connection issues where the phone indicates that there is no data or where apps move no further than ‘connecting’.

I have the same issue. Data is very unreliable. I either get that icon showing no data or else apps get stuck at “connecting…”. Quite frustrating. Hopefully, there’s an update soon. I saw they released a new update for the standard version so let’s hope there’s something coming our way.

Some say that with a replacement device, the network seems to work perfectly, while some say that the network connection becomes quite unstable when it is switching from 4G to 5G and vice versa.

This issue seems to be a common one among the first-generation 5G smartphones.

According to an April 10 post by Kim Eun-Jin on BusinessKorea, there have been network connectivity complaints from Galaxy S10 5G users in South Korea, especially while switching from 5G to LTE. Network disconnection was a common complaint amongst users, and rebooting the device to reconnect to the network seemed to work only after having done that quite a number of times. This issue was not resolved even after an update was offered by Samsung.

The upcoming software update for OnePlus 7 Pro 5G is expected to bring some improvements to the 5G modem as well as fix installation issues.
