Last week Oppo has unveiled its new smartphone series, two models also are released in the Netherlands. The Oppo Reno is a middle-class smartphone; this model will go on sale on May 10 and seems to offer a good price/quality ratio. Besides, the Chinese manufacturer has introduced the Reno 10X Zoom, a high-end phone that – as the name suggests – is equipped with a 10x zoom lens. An Oppo Reno 5G has also been announced; this variant will only be available in Switzerland within Europe for the time being.

The Reno has a very stylish design. The device has a full-screen design, the entire front consists of a display – with no notches or holes in the screen. A 6.4-inch Full HD + screen has been applied with an aspect ratio of 19.5: 9. Oppo has come up with a unique solution for the selfie camera. The models from this smartphone series are namely equipped with a pop-up camera that comes out of the casing diagonally, also called a ‘shark fin’.
The extendable camera system accommodates a 16 megapixel (f / 2.0) camera, which is ready for use in just 0.8 seconds. With the AI beauty camera you can easily make impressive self-portraits. Because light effects are corrected, the skin color can be adjusted automatically, with more beautiful and natural selfies as the end result.
Unfortunately, this system ensures that the phone is not waterproof, nevertheless, you do not have to worry about durability. Oppo has extensively tested the pop-up camera, the system could be used 200,000 times without any problems. That means in practice that if you can use the camera 100 times a day for five years.
The ‘drop protection’ mechanism is also unique. In the unlikely event that the phone slips out of your hands, the camera will retract fully automatically during the fall to prevent damage.

The Android 9 smartphone is powered by the Snapdragon 710 processor with 6GB RAM and 256GB storage space. The Reno is therefore sufficiently powerful for performing everyday tasks, watching a video or playing a mobile game. The storage memory is not expandable with this model. However, the device is equipped with a 3.5 mm headphone connection, this has been omitted from the 10X Zoom variant.
A double camera with a 48 megapixel Sony sensor and a 5MP camera with ultra-night mode has been placed on the back, so you can shoot detailed and noise-free photos even in the evenings. In addition, there is an artistic portrait mode available as well as color mapping. The Reno makes videos in a beautiful 4K resolution @ 30fps. A time-lapse and slow-motion function is also built in.
