Oracle has announced its world’s first autonomous operating system which provisions itself, scales itself, tunes itself and patches itself while running. Autonomous Linux powers Oracle Cloud and Oracle Engineered Systems as it is based on Oracle Linux.
“Autonomy is the defining technology of a second-generation cloud,” Oracle co-founder and CTO Larry Ellison contended in his keynote while addressing at the Oracle OpenWorld conference in San Francisco. He further added any Red Hat application would run unchanged on Oracle Autonomous Linux.
Besides, Oracle also introduced a highly available Oracle Cloud Infrastructure component to monitor and control systems – Oracle OS Management Service, whether they run Autonomous Linux, Linux, or Windows. The service allows users to automate capabilities to execute common management tasks for Linux systems.
Oracle Autonomous Linux and Oracle OS Management Services are included with Oracle Premier Support at no extra charge with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure compute services.
Additionally, it also comes with a new security service called Oracle Data Safe, which is essentially a unified control center that monitors security issues with data, users, and configuration.
According to Ellison, Oracle Cloud has seen opening in 12 regions in the past year; currently, it operates in 16 regions globally and plans to launch 20 new regions by the end of 2020.
