A Sci-Fi Concept Becomes Reality
Honor has shown off a smartphone that appears straight out of a sci-fi movie: a phone with a small robotic arm that can completely manipulate a retractable camera. Labeled the “Honor Robot Phone,” the device is to be showcased for the first time at MWC (Mobile World Congress) in Barcelona in 2026.
A teaser released by the company reveals a rear camera module island that flips open to reveal a properly articulated arm supporting a detachable camera module. It is easy enough to explain, but it is a striking sight. Honor plans to develop a phone that cannot take photos, but one that actually reaches out to help.
How The Robot Phone Appears
From the brief video, the Robot Phone resembles a standard, contemporary smartphone. It has a slim body, a shiny back, and a common camera island. The deviation concerns the said island, which, in addition to carrying fixed lenses, also houses a device that slides open and deploys a small robotic arm. Atop the arm is a rotating camera module that repositions itself as it sweeps the scene, following motion and angles that a fixed lens cannot easily get. The majority of the back still looks to have a standard camera array, but the pivoting camera is obviously the showpiece.
More Than a Party Trick
In the demo, the pivoting module more closely resembles a traditional miniature gimbal than a simple pop-up selfie lens. It pops out, tracks a subject around a room, and then pulls when it is finished. In one clip, it appears to scan its surroundings and reframe automatically as a person moves, suggesting the arm is not just motorized but is guided by software that can interpret what it sees.
The AI + Robotics Vision
Honor has positioned the Robot Phone as a marriage of robotics and on-device Artificial Intelligence, and not a mere mechanical trick. The company says it plans to build a physical module with perception and decision-making software so the phone can behave like an assistant rather than a passive instrument.
The most obvious promise from the teaser is automatic subject tracking. The camera tracks individuals as they move, keeping them in frame without requiring the user to hold or reset the device. This would significantly simplify video recording, with use cases spanning various niches.
