Samsung has always brought up new and interesting smartphone designs. One had a display on the back (possibly the Galaxy S11e), the other had a pull-out display (possibly the Galaxy S11 Plus), and several foldable phone models were in review. This time the idea of the Korean manufacturer is going to be something completely new… No, I do not mean the Samsung Mobile Ads that the company wants to integrate into Galaxy phones.
Samsung has a smartphone in development with a movable display. It is not the housing that you can move and/or resize. You can move the touchscreen display up and down yourself. What is the use of this invention? You can read that in this article.
Samsung phone with movable display
At the end of March 2019, Samsung Electronics filed a utility patent with the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office) for an ‘Electronic device with a movable flexible display and operating method thereof’. The patent was published on 3 October.
This is an apparently normal smartphone. However, the housing accommodates a flexible display that is movable. The user can slide the screen upwards, after which the display scrolls for the components that are integrated at the top of the device, such as the camera, receiver, LED indicator and other sensors. This gives the user a larger screen area, without increasing the overall dimensions of the phone.
By default you have an almost full-screen design. If you want to use the front camera then you can slide the flexible screen down and you can take selfies or maintain a video call. It seems to be an interim solution until the camera and all other components disappear completely behind the screen.
The patented Samsung phone detects which application is in use and in which state the device is wrong (display is retracted or retracted). Functions are also linked to this. Some examples; during the call, the display has slid open (full screen), by sliding the display down again you can end the conversation. If you are on the home screen and moving the screen down then the camera application will start automatically. The same applies to messages. If you receive a WhatsApp message and then slide the screen down, the keyboard appears and you can send a message.
It is an ingenious invention that is well thought out and well developed. Yet it is not likely that this Samsung Galaxy phone will actually be put on the market. Finally, technology like this does not develop for 1 or 2 years. However, the first smartphones with an under-screen camera are expected in 1 or 2 years. This makes the usefulness of this invention practically nil.
Moreover, the screen is only minimally larger and the functions that are linked to it are handy but as simple to achieve with a regular phone. We will not think about the price, but you can imagine that innovations like this also ensure a high selling price.
