Samsung Electronics has officially announced the launch of the Exynos 9 Series 9810 today. This latest premium application processor (AP) is a product of Samsung’s second-generation 10-nanometer (nm) FinFET process. It promises to bring out the next level of performance from smartphones and smart devices. The powerful third-generation 2.9 GHz custom CPU, the industry-first 6CA gigabit LTE modem, deep learning processing, and sophisticated image processing-based software make it look quite promising on paper.
It has already won the CES 2018 Innovation Award HONOREE in the Embedded Technologies product category. It is expected to be displayed at the event taking place in between January 9 to 12 in Las Vegas, USA.
The Exynos 9 Series 9810 is our most innovative mobile processor yet, with our third-generation custom CPU, ultra-fast gigabit LTE modem and, deep learning-enhanced image processing. The Exynos 9810 will be a key catalyst for innovation in smart platforms such as smartphones, personal computing and automotive for the coming AI era. – Ben Hur, the vice president of System LSI marketing at Samsung Electronics.
The 10nm process technology, which is the most advanced in this stream to date, enables the Exynos 9810 to multitask seamlessly. It also offers faster loading and less transition time between the apps. The octa-core CPU has four powerful 3rd generation custom cores capable of reaching 2.9 gigahertz (GHz) and additional four cores, optimized for efficiency. The architecture is planned to widen the pipeline while improving the cache memory. As a result of this specific design, the single-core performance is enhanced two-fold, whereas the multi-core performance is increased by about 40% compared to its predecessor.
It can also enhance the user experience by utilizing neural network-based deep learning and stronger security. The processor recognizes people or items in photos for fast image searching or categorization. It also comes with the hybrid face detection feature that provides realistic face-tracking filters and stronger security while unlocking the device with one’s face. The processor has a separate security processing unit just to protect vital personal information, including facial, iris, and fingerprint information.
With the help of the LTE modem, apart from broadcasting or streaming videos at up to UHD resolution, it can play 360-degree ones as well. Samsung has used the latest 1.2Gbps LTE modem embedded in Exynos 9810, which is the first Cat.18 LTE modem capable of supporting up to 6x carrier aggregation (CA) for 1.2Gbps downlink and 200 megabits per second (Mbps) uplink. The 4×4 MIMO (Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output) and 256-QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) scheme of the modem help to maximize the transfer rate by utilizing the enhanced Licensed-Assisted Access (ELA) technology.
The processor comes with a dedicated image processing and upgraded multi-format codec (MFC) as well. Apart from offering a faster and more energy-efficient image and visual processing, it also provides advanced stabilization for images and video of up to UHD resolution. It improves the performance while taking real-time out-of-focus photography in high resolution and brighter pictures in low light with reduced noise and motion blur. With the upgraded MFC, the users can record & play videos at up to UHD resolution at 120 fps.
Currently, the Exynos 9 Series 9810 processor is in the mass production stage.
