Samsung has officially launched four new ISOCELL image sensors today. These four new sensors: 108 MP ISOCELL HM2, 64 MP ISOCELL GW3, 48 MP ISOCELL GM5, and 32 MP ISOCELL JD1 are part of Samsung’s new ISOCELL technology which come with a 0.7 micrometers-pixel.
This makes these new sensor 0.1 micrometers-pixel smaller than the older ISOCELL sensors with similar resolutions. The 0.7 micrometers-pixel sensors have their physical size reduced by 15% and their thinness lowered by 10%. It will help to reduce camera bumps and make the devices more compact.
The reduction in pixel size might worry a few people about the quality of the image. However, Samsung has ensured that the image’s quality doesn’t suffer. It provides these sensors with ISOCELL Plus and Smart ISO technologies. The ISOCELL Plus increases the retention of light received in the pixel while the Smart ISO adjusts the ISO settings and optimizes exposure according to the ambient lighting.
Table of Contents
ISOCELL JD 1
The JD 1 sensor is the smallest amongst the four at 1/3.14-inches which makes it ideal for smartphones with bezel-less displays that require a small front camera. It also suits devices with pop-up mechanisms for the selfie camera.
ISOCELL GM 5
GM 5 sensor is designed for use in telescoping or wide-angle cameras.
ISOCELL GW3
The 64 MP GW3 sensor is perfect for mainstream devices and can act as their main sensor. It can support video recording at up to 4K resolution at 60 fps.
ISOCELL HM2
The largest of the four, the 108MP ISOCELL HM2 sensor is also the most powerful and is the third Samsung 108 MP sensor after HM1 and HMX. It’s the smallest among the three.
Availability
GM 5 sensor is still being tested by Samsung, whereas the rest are already in mass production. They should be available on smartphones later this year. Alongside Samsung also plans to bring out ISOCELL 2.0 which claims to improve the light sensitivity by 12% as compared to the ISOCELL Plus technology.
