The world leader in advanced semiconductor technology, Samsung Electronics has unveiled today that it has established a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) on the product carbon footprint of its semiconductor business.

With the establishment of the Samsung LCA, Samsung has achieved verification from DNV, one of the world’s leading independent certification bodies.

By quantifying the quantity of energy, materials, and trash discharged, LCA is a methodology for evaluating environmental consequences throughout the lifecycle of commercial products, processes, or services.

Samsung Life Cycle Assessment thoroughly examines the carbon footprint of their semiconductors, from the extraction of raw materials to chip fabrication, assembling, and testing. For credibility and transparency, its results are in line with ISO 14040, ISO 14044, and ISO 14067.

The carbon footprint is a metric that can be used to track and lower carbon emissions, and it is frequently used by Samsung and its customers to understand the environmental impact throughout all phases of Samsung’s semiconductor products.

Expanding Carbon Footprint for Semiconductors

Since 2019, 6 of Samsung’s memory devices have gained Carbon Trust certification for carbon reduction, and 37 of Samsung’s semiconductor products have received accreditation from the Carbon Trust and UL for their carbon footprint. DRAM, SSD, embedded storage, mobile SoC, mobile image sensor, and automotive LED packages are among Samsung’s environmentally friendly product offerings.

Therefore, according to the semiconductor technology leader, it will calculate the carbon footprints of chips produced at all of its global manufacturing, testing, and assembly facilities in Korea, China, and the U.S. using its Samsung Life Cycle Assessment established at the end of last year.

To provide a more thorough analysis and ultimately lessen the environmental impact of various applications such as mobile and wearables, data centers, consumer electronics, automotive, communications, and more, Samsung will expand its LCA to include water and resource footprints. This is done with sustainability at its core.

Creating Sustainable Environment

Commenting on the new achievement, Dooguen Song, Executive Vice President of the Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) Center at Samsung Electronics, said they will support their customers to achieve carbon neutrality, as well as become more transparent on the environmental impact of semiconductors.

“Since 2019, we have been actively mobilizing efforts to measure and reduce the carbon emissions of our key memory and logic solutions,” – Dooguen Song.

“By leveraging LCA, we will be able to support our customers to achieve their carbon neutrality, as well as becoming more transparent on the environmental impact of the semiconductors we produce worldwide.”

On the other hand, JangSup Lee, CEO of DNV Business Assurance Korea, pointed out that Samsung, the firm, tends to take part in creating a more sustainable environment in the future.

“As a global expert in energy and environmental certification, DNV is pleased to have partnered with and to congratulate Samsung on successfully establishing its reliable LCA,” – JangSup Lee.

“Together with global business leaders like Samsung, we will continue to take part in creating a more sustainable environment in the future.”
