Samsung may be considering to enter the drone market, a breakthrough among its direct competitors. It would not be the first time Samsung has been looking for more technological advancement in comparison to its competition.
The South Korean tech giant always seeks to enter every technology market aspect which has now resulted to make Samsung the first smartphone maker to seriously consider making drones for the mass audience. The recent patent leaked today is a transformable drone, something which is not done yet by any manufacturer.
The drone arms can retract into the body, it will have several specific sensors. In addition to the camera, there would be a gyroscope (used to assist the drone in its navigation), a barometer, ultrasonic sensor, temperature, light, and ultraviolet.
One aspect of the current disclosure provides a transformable drone, which an arm for securing a propeller can be folded and extended into and out of the main body (or a fuselage) which may result in a UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) capable of combine portability and in-flight performance through a transformable body (or fuselage). – Samsung
In addition, the drone would include common technologies such as wireless control via smartphone, tablet or computer. The company even claims that it could be controlled by any electronic device, including appliances such as a television or a refrigerator.
In the patent, Samsung cites that while UAVs were historically developed and used in view of military interests and needs, the addition of a camera to the drones resulted in commercial popularity as well.
This is not Samsung’s first patent for drones, but it sure is the most promising. Patents began in 2016 and this would be the fifth only in 2018. Samsung recently also dethroned IBM as the company with the highest number of patents in the United States.
