What if two gargantuan studios joints together to forge a brawny brute? Then, it could be noted that SEGA acquired Rovio Studios for a historical sum of €706 million. Previously in April, Sega Sammy quoted its strategy to make a takeover bid to reach “the whole share of spectacular Rovio’s studios” at a whopping cost of $776 million.
Initially, there was no clue of what it was to be like or how it would be recognizable, but lately, everything stumbles upon until the industry heard it from the horse mouth. Earlier today, the official X (formerly known as Twitter) handles posted a picture of Sonic teaming up with the Red angry bird, reaffirming that the acquisition of the Rovio Studio had successfully been completed. When the announcement was made in April, the purchase was supposed to be held in September, but earlier, it was meant to be a “friendly takeover.”
According to its abstract, Sega bought the Rovio studio to jack up its mobile game portfolio. The company desires to harness “Rovio’s idiosyncratic know-how in live service mobile game operation to take Sega’s current and new titles to the global mobile gaming market, where there is a high ability to make it happen.” Meanwhile, Sega also mentions that Rovio plans to nimble beyond mobile games and desires to help it achieve this.
Sega Sammy Holdings president and group CEO Haruki Satomi said in April: “Among the rapidly growing global gaming market, the mobile gaming market has especially high potential, and it has been Sega’s long-term goal to accelerate its expansion in this field.”
He added, “Historically, as represented by the Sonic the Hedgehog series, Sega has released countless video game titles to various gaming platforms. I am confident that, through a combination of both companies’ brands, characters, fanbase, as well as corporate culture and functionality, there will be significant synergies created going forward.”
