Shanghai’s Hongqiao Railway Station became the first railway station to have a 5G digital indoor system (DIS) after the launch of a 5G network. China Mobile Shanghai has launched a 5G network. This also laid the foundation for Shanghai as a Dual-Gigaband city.
The station is supposed to have deep indoor 5G coverage for passengers by the end of this year. The station, one of Asia’s biggest in terms of traffic, handles more than 60 million passengers annually.
5G comes with high bandwidth and low latency, providing strong connections. But network signals lose a lot while penetrating buildings due to high-frequency usage. This acts as a major drawback for providing 5G connections in an indoor environment, making it further challenging for bigger buildings like the Hongqiao Railway Station. For now, 5G base stations are mostly being deployed in outdoor environments.
Huawei’s 5G Digital Indoor System is currently the only solution for a 5G indoor network in the industry, which is why it was chosen by China Mobile Shanghai. The product, made in Shanghai, is now prepared for delivery.
The launch event saw an impressive demonstration of the 1.2Gbps rate owing to the 5G DIS, led by China Mobile Shanghai and Huawei. Users can enjoy entertainment hassle-free at the station and on the ride and download about 2GB of movies in 20 seconds.
5G is expected to be the Internet of Things (IoT) foundation. The demand for virtual reality (VR), IoT, artificial intelligence (AI), ultra-HD video, etc. is expected to grow dramatically with the rise of 5G. 5G will become a key to the future digital world, as seen in futuristic movies, transforming the world of the mobile Internet, data, cloud computing, as well as smart devices.
