Google takes another run on a new social networking app called Shoelace as a more experimental area. Google’s Area 120 incubator is creating a hyperlocal social network aimed at organizing local events and activities.

Shoelace comes just months after Google shut down Google+, which is to be used by listing your interests in the app. The app will automatically recommend a series of “hand-picked” local activities, which it calls “Loops,” with a map interface to view and RSVP to other people’s Loops.

Unlike other social networking platforms, Shoelace seems to have much more modest ambitions that aim for Facebook’s ubiquitous Events functionality. The app is merely aimed at growing your group of friends by matching you with people with the same interests and hobbies.

Currently, the app has launched an invite approach testing phase in New York City and selected areas. Those of you in NYC can get involved only if you have a Google account to sign in. The team, however, expects to expand the rollout to more cities across the US soon though it is unknown when it might happen. It is available as a mobile app iOS and Android devices.

You can download and definitely give it a try via the Google Play Store.
