Japanese Sony is of course not only concerned with the development of the PlayStation 5. Another important branch for Sony is the camera market, of which the body camera is part. Sony Bodycam chest harness is available in all shapes and sizes. The areas of application are therefore wide, from simple action cameras for recreational use to robust, professional cameras for security, police or military purposes.
Such camera systems also come in handy in sports, such as running or triathlon. A good action cam is extremely portable, comfortable and offers high image quality with effective image stabilization. We may also expect a new bodycam harness from Sony in the future.
Sony action camera for the chest
Sony Corporation was granted a patent at the end of last year by the JPO (Japan Patent Office) for a ‘Vest with a portable camera’. In addition to a series of patent sketches, Sony has also added two color renders of a prototype bodycam.
It is an interesting design, the harness is worn on the chest. Thanks to the rubber material, it stays tight on the body, even when you move (quickly). Moreover, the mesh material provides extra breathability and a lightweight. Ideal during exercise, where you do not want to be hindered in your freedom of movement. For example, skydiving, skiing or motocross.
At the front is a small but high-quality camera integrated. It is an extremely compact and portable body cam. This camera is also removable. It is obvious that it will also be possible to change lenses, depending on the area of application for which you want to use the camera.
The color images shown in the patent shows that the Sony bodycam chest harness is on a sports shirt. Research by our editors has shown that this is a T-shirt from sportswear brand Under Armor. The logo DNS is mentioned on this, this is a Japanese company for sport protein products. We also see the Iwaki FC logo, this is a Japanese football club. Although these companies are probably not directly involved with this bodycam vest from Sony, it is clear from this that the application area must be sought in particular in sports.
Sony already has some experience with action cameras and body harnesses. In 2015, the Sony AKA-CMH1 Chest Mount Harness was released, which is still sold in the Netherlands. However, this ‘harness’ is designed much simpler, and no camera is integrated either. You can use this harness in combination with a Sony action cam, but these are a lot bigger, which does not benefit the freedom of movement. It is also an outdated model, meant for hobby use.
Sony bodycam harness, however, seems to be intended for (semi) professional sports purposes. For example, it can be an ideal auxiliary attribute for a referee during a football match. Just as the video referee made his appearance in the highest competition, in the form of the VAR (Video Assistant Referee).
Although the patent does not speak about the functions and features of this bodycam, you can assume that Sony, as a leading camera sensor manufacturer, also opts for a solid image sensor, with which at least 4K videos can be recorded. In the summary patent description, it is also stated that the harness has an integrated battery.
Whether and when this camera vest will be introduced is still unknown. You can’t buy this action camera yet. Sony is also the official broadcaster of the Olympic Games 2020 in Tokyo, Japan. Possibly the Sony bodycam can come in handy there.
