Sony is in a joint venture with ELTRES to launch a CXM1501GR communication module within a size of 16mm×16mm×2.0mm. ELTRES is Sony’s low power consumption wide-area (LPWA) communication standard, featuring stable long-distance communication, high-speed mobile communication, and low power consumption. Providing pre-service in Tokyo from September 2018, Sony Network Communications, NEC Nets SSI, and Orix have set out to launch public services in Japan.

ELTRES™ is a new Low Power Wide Area (LPWA) wireless communication standard suitable for IoT networks. By taking advantage of the three major features of the strong long-distance communication, high-speed mobility communication, and low power consumption, information collected by various sensors can be efficiently used for over a wide area, which also enables new use cases.

Sony announces today that equipping loT devices with communication module will make it easier for the company to get connected to the ELTRES Network Service. Sony aims to make use of this product in a slew of loT devices. This CXM1501GR Sony communication module will enable Sony to make stable wireless communications over long distances and while moving at high speeds, thereby creating a new market.

The ELTRES IoT Network IoT service, developed by Sony’s semiconductor business, Sony Semiconductor Solutions, uses international standards developed by the non-profit group’s European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), which Sony named ELTRES, with its own devices and services.

Sony communication module “CXM1501GR” incorporates a newly developed modulation LSI that emits radio waves in the 920 MHz band and a circuit that performs impedance matching with an external antenna based on the protocol of the ELTRES communication standard. It has obtained type-certification from the Japan Approvals Institute for Telecommunications Equipment as compliant to Japan’s Telecommunications Business Act. It has a built-in impedance-matching circuit for a 920 MHz external antenna that allows for direct connection to a general-purpose antenna, enabling the custom antenna to be designed easily.

The new communication module will come with 20 mW antenna radiated power along with frequency between 923.6 MHz to 928.0 MHz. It has four repeated transmissions of 0.4 sec or shorter packets which are scheduled to roll out sometime in the coming month of June.
