The Chinese company Vivo, today held a press conference at MWC 2019 Shanghai where it made several announcements, presenting, in particular, its first smartphone with support for 5G networks – Vivo iQOO 5G. Alas, the announcement turned out to be very formal and practically did without specifics.
The Vivo iQOO 5G smartphone will hit the market in the next three months. The manufacturer talked about the difficulties associated with the implementation of 5G support. The hardware basis of the Vivo iQOO 5G smartphone is the Snapdragon 855 SoC, supplemented by an external Snapdragon X50 modem to provide 5G connectivity.
Actually, this bundle is used by almost all 5G smartphone models that have already entered the market. 5G requires four antennas versus two for 4G. Thus, with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, the total number of antennas that need to fit in a compact package, and even to avoid interference, increases to eight. Also, the external modem requires more space on the motherboard.
And since 5G requires more power, Vivo could not reduce the battery. Instead, engineers had to find a way out which was the development of complex 3D designs. In general, the prototype of the smartphone shown remained connected to the 5G network all day and saved 70% of the battery charge.
Qin Fei, director of the Vivo 5G Research Center, recalled the main benefits of 5G networks: less signal delay, increased bandwidth, and more concurrent connections. The delay in next-generation networks can be reduced by 10 ms, which will primarily benefit video streaming services and AR applications.
At the event, Vivo once again announced ultra-fast charging for Vivo SUPER FlashCharge smartphones with a capacity of 120 watts. Recall, the technology was first introduced last week – it allows you to charge your smartphone with a 4000 mAh battery at 50% for 5 minutes and fully for 13 minutes. Alas, this time they did not disclose any special technical details, apart from the specific values of the current and voltage – 20 V at 6 A.
