Whatsapp Built a System That Stores Payments Data Locally

WhatsApp, the huge instant messaging App stated on 9th Oct that it had built a local system to store data which is related to payments of Reserve Bank of India (RBI)’s local data.

In response to India’s payments circular, we have built a system that stores payment related data locally in India. In India almost 1 million people are testing WhatsApp payments to send money to each other in a simple and secure way. We hope to expand the feature to all India soon so we can contribute to country financial inclusion goal. – WhatsApp spokesperson

RBI’s data localization norms will come into action from 15th October.

Unfettered supervisory access to data stored with these system providers as also with their service providers/intermediates/third party vendors and other entities in the payment ecosystem. The Central Bank

RBI stated, “All system providers shall ensure that the entire data relating to payment systems operated by them are stored in a system only in India”, and added, “data should include the full end-to-end transaction details, as part of the message/payment instruction.”
