Just last weekend, WhatsApp finally rolled out the long-anticipated edit messages feature. Over the past few years, the social media platform has been reportedly working on the feature but it has eventually let the users edit their messages on the app for up to 15 minutes after they have been sent. However, in a new development, the platform is again said to be working on a feature to allow users to set up a WhatsApp username aside from the phone number we all know.

We confirm the development in a recent post from WABetaInfo, who revealed that the social media platform is working on a feature to set up a WhatsApp username, and it will be available in a future update of the app. The feature when finally rolled out will enhance users’ experience as it will allow them to choose unique usernames for their accounts.

WhatsApp Username Feature

As seen in the screenshot shared by WABetaInfo, the feature when released will be located within the app settings. Here, WhatsApp users will be able to access the feature through the WhatsApp Settings menu, specifically in the Profile section box. Therefore, users can stop identifying themselves as contacts merely by their phone numbers by selecting a username. Instead, they will have the choice to designate a unique and memorable username.

As reported by the outlet, WhatsApp users will soon be able to start discussions with others only by typing their preferred username into the chat box, eliminating the need to know their phone numbers.

Although the exact details of how the WhatsApp username feature will work are still unknown, it is anticipated that conversations started using usernames will still be safeguarded by the app’s strong end-to-end encryption. This guarantees that user privacy and data security will always be given the utmost importance.

Currently, the official rolled out date is still unknown. The tipster only confirmed that the feature is still in the developing stage and will be available in a future update of the app. Hence, stay connected with TechGenyz for more updates.
