The world saw its first ready-to-produce in-display fingerprint scanning smartphone today at CES 2018, courtesy of Vivo. With this futuristic device, the company promises an unprecedented mobile experience.
World’s First Vivo In-display Fingerprint Smartphone is ready for mass production. The users can now unlock their devices just by putting their fingers on the smartphone display. This technology is being considered the future of fingerprint scanning in smartphones.
The global consultancy Canalys confirms that almost 22 million full-screen smartphones were shipped worldwide in the second quarter of the last year. The bezel-less displays are predicted to occupy from 20% in 2017 to over 50% of the smartphone market by 2020. The fingerprint recognition technology has been in use for quite some time now. It is pretty natural that the fingerprint scanning technology is expected to evolve and fulfill the new user habits and demands of the upcoming user generation.
With our efforts in extensive consumer research and long-term R&D investment, Vivo is well positioned to pioneer the development of fingerprint scanning technology. We first presented a prototype of our fingerprint scanning solution at MWC Shanghai 2017 based on an ultrasonic sensor, and have remained committed to realizing our vision for future smartphones. Today’s showcase of a ready-to-produce in-display fingerprint scanning smartphone featuring an optical fingerprint sensor is a big leap forward in bringing consumers this long-awaited, futuristic mobile experience. We are very excited to make it available to consumers soon. – Alex Feng, Senior Vice President of Vivo
The latest in-display fingerprint scanning technology in Vivo is supported by global partner Synaptics. It supports various usage scenarios beyond unlocking the smartphone. The best part is that the fingerprint scanning input gets activated only when it is required. A graphical UI designed exclusively for this purpose will appear on these smartphones’ screen when fingerprint recognition is needed. The users just have to press the ‘fingerprint graphic’ on the screen with their fingers to perform the unlocking. Once the unlocking is done, the fingerprint UI will disappear and will no more disrupt the overall visual experience.
Vivo has confirmed that the smartphone is ready for mass-production. The device is expected to be announced in early 2018.
