Xiaomi today, April 9, announced its opening of three more smartphone plants with Foxconn in India. Additionally, it will manufacture printed circuit board assembly or PCBA in its first Surface Mount Technology or SMT plant in Chennai.
MD of Xiaomi India, Manu Kumar Jain, tweeted about the same denoting that these are the brand’s efforts under the #MakeInIndia initiative. One of the tweets reads: “5 manufacturing plants across 2 campuses. 10K employees, 95%+ women. Capacity= 2 ph/sec”.
It as well mentions that the company already hosted the top 50 global suppliers. Manu writes: “If all of them invest in India, it could potentially mean ₹15K Cr investment.” The attached photo with this tweet says it would equal 50,000 jobs.
Manu highlighted the capacity part in a separate tweet. He seems proud in stating that they can now ‘produce more than 2 phones / second, during operational hours.’
On the point of investment, Xiaomi’s new announcements have come from the first-ever Supplier Investment Summit in Delhi. Manu, at the stage, said that his brand is one of the pioneers in India to start a local assembly of PCBA that holds 50% value of a smartphone. The summit was attended by over 50 global smartphone component suppliers.
The three new plants are located on campuses in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh, and Sriperumbudur of Tamil Nadu. Xiaomi additionally said that all of the assembly works are done by women.
Xiaomi’s eyes on expanding its PCBA production to 100% of locally produced phones within the third quarter of the 2018 calendar year. The announcement regarding the production increment sees the brand as the second largest one in value addition in India after Samsung.
