Xiaomi has created a reputation for itself because of its great value-for-money smartphones. But where there’s light, there’s also shadow, and Xiaomi devices are notorious for receiving the fewest Android updates. That’s set to change with the launch of the company’s new flagship phones on September 15.
Xiaomi just announced that the 11T and 11T Pro would receive three generations of Android updates and four years of security fixes, matching Samsung’s recent pledge.
Unlike Samsung, which is committed to introducing its new update method to smartphones that had already been released when the announcement was made, Xiaomi is playing it safe and only pledges to the policy for its upcoming phones.
“We’ll also explore the feasibility of delivering the extended Android system and security upgrades services to other Xiaomi devices,” the business claims.
In any event, the news is an important first step for a corporation that has previously been criticized for sluggish or non-existent Android updates. It’s also a wise move, given that the company is attempting to break into the flagship market after focusing on entry-level and mid-range handsets.
If Xiaomi follows through on its promise, it will be able to deliver longer software updates than Google, which is limited to three years of support for its Pixel portfolio.
If Xiaomi’s new update strategy doesn’t work out, the company has a backup plan in the form of a little disclaimer attached to its statement that says:
“Upgrades and features to the Android operating system may differ from device to device and market to market. The update’s availability will be determined by several factors, including the update’s complexity, local legislation, market conditions, and other factors.”
