Xiaomi, the renowned smartphone giant, is set to unveil its first electric vehicle – the SU7 Max tomorrow, December 21st, as a new leak has revealed the launch poster image. Tipster Abhishek Yadav leaked the poster via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, confirming the launching of Xiaomi’s First EV to be announced on December 21st at 18:00 Chinese time.

Meanwhile, in mid-last month, reports revealed that the smartphone maker applied for a sales license for their first EV in China – the Xiaomi SU7 sedan. The report shed light on some key specifications, revealing that the EV would be contract-manufactured by Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co. Ltd (BAIC). The car project was said to be previously codenamed MS11.

In China, every car must be approved by the local regulator before hitting the market, and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) publishes the list of vehicles that go through the homologation process every month. As far back as 2021, Xiaomi announced it would join the EV manufacturing race, claiming it would invest 10 billion yuan (about $1.4 billion) into the project. In August of 2023, Xiaomi registered the domain XiaomiEV.com.

Xiaomi’s First EV – SU7 Max: What to Expect

As per the previous leak, the Xiaomi SU7 is slated to be an electric sedan with dimensions of 4997/1963/1455 mm and a 3000 mm wheelbase. Offering versatility, it will feature two wheel options – 19″ and 20″ – with corresponding tire specifications. Notable is the inclusion of a lidar system, suggesting the possibility of face recognition unlocking functionality, complemented by a B pillar camera.

The powertrain options include a Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) with a 220 kW motor and an All-Wheel Drive (AWD) boasting a maximum power of 495 kW. The battery packs, sourced from BYD and CATL, cater to different trim options, promising diverse choices for consumers. Inside, the SU7’s in-car system will be powered by Xiaomi’s HyperOS, an in-house developed operating system versatile enough to cater to both smartphones and cars.

Notably, the Xiaomi SU7 will introduce an active rear wing in select trims, enhancing aerodynamics and performance. The electric motor, TZ220XS000, manufactured by United Automotive Electronics Co., Ltd, will incorporate an Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) function, allowing seamless toll payments on designated roads.

According to MIIT filings, the SU7 will have three versions – SU7, SU7 Pro, and SU7 Max. Reports suggest that mass production is set to commence in December 2023, with deliveries expected to kick off in February 2024. As it stands, the Chinese smartphone maker has not officially confirmed the launch, however, the leaked poster has given us a hint of its coming.
