Messaging apps like Whatsapp, Facebook Messenger, Snapchat, and WeChat are gaining pace in the world of messaging apps. On the contrary, Yahoo Messenger, considered to be one of the best old messaging apps, confirmed its closure on July 17. This app has a very strong history. During earlier times, it was reckoned to be an alternative for email and SMS on mobile devices.
The company assures its users that its diligent developers are in the process of developing a messaging app which may hit the market soon. This upgraded app may give tough competition to other related apps. Thus the company is experimenting and further considering how to gain its position and overthrow the core competitors.
The company mentioned, “There currently isn’t a replacement product available for Yahoo Messenger.” “We’re constantly experimenting with new services and apps, one of which is an invite-only group messaging app called Yahoo Squirrel (currently in beta).” A squirrel is a group messaging app by Yahoo which made its debut last month.
Yahoo has extended its support to Yahoo users, as anyone who is logged into any Yahoo property is logged into Messenger. The company stated that users’ Yahoo ID will remain intact for other services, including Mail and fantasy sports.
The company’s spokesperson says, “We know we have many loyal fans who have used Yahoo Messenger since its beginning as one of the first chat apps of its kind,” it notes. “As the communications landscape continues to change over, we’re focusing on building and introducing new, exciting communications tools that better fit consumer needs.”
Yahoo Messenger was the lifeline among the millions of communication users who started 20 years ago. This app was launched in 1998, where it gained huge popularity in no time. But with the introduction of WhatsApp (created by an ex-Yahoo employee), Yahoo messenger had to take a back step.
Yahoo Messenger currently holds the 160th rank on iOS and 117th rank on Android in the social networking category. This report was obtained through App Annie. The users can download their chat history on Messenger for the next six months.
The company is gearing up for a big video and content overhaul, which is considered to be another reason behind the shutting down of Messenger. On the verge of closure, the company officials have not disclosed the precise reason behind it.
