YouTube Kids, a video platform that lets families set age categories, viewing time, etc. for their kids, is now available on Apple TV. The memo sent out by the video platform mentioned that safety controls still need to be managed and set via the mobile version of the YouTube Kids app.
YouTube though comes with tons of kid-friendly content, most of the content available on this platform is not kids friendly, to say the least.
The parents would obviously want a safe environment for their kids, and that includes controlling what they watch on online entertainment platforms such as this.
YouTube started paying more attention to those videos that, on its surface, look like they are kid-friendly, but their content is far from being such. The 2017 “Elsagate” controversy is well known. All in all, the main YouTube app is risky for the kids. In fact, only last year YouTube disabled comments on videos that make predatory comments on videos, and also reached a $170 million with the Federal Trade Commission over violations of the Children’s Online Privacy Act (COPPA), putting into place new rules for kids’ video.
However, the content creators complained that the new rules were convoluted and that they needed further clarification. In order to satisfy the demands of parents, and to make the digital space a safe space for children, YouTube has been expanding how YouTube kids should become available to people. Before the FTC settlement, YouTube had launched a website for YouTube Kids.
The content available on YouTube Kids is filtered using algorithms. This is not a foolproof plan; adult content could still show up on the Kids app.
The YouTube Kids on the Apple TV could be set up by simply installing the app. The users will be prompted to sign in into their YouTube accounts. After signing in, the users can simply follow the prompts on Apple TV and access YouTube Kids. After signing in, the user’s parental controls and setting will be transferred to the YouTube Kids experience on Apple TV.
