Porsche has unveiled the 99 X Electric Formula E cars that will debut in Formula E championship.
At an interactive launch event hosted on a Livestream gaming platform, Neel Jani and Andre Lotterer revealed the car. It is required for all Formula E teams to use the ‘Gen 2‘ standard spec chassis and batteries.
It is named in Porsche’s usual fashion – with the three digits representing Porsche’s racing cars and two-door road machines. Porsche says the system powering the 99X has been developed using the expertise it built up running the Le Mans 24 Hours-winning 919 Hybrid LMP1 sports car.
Ahead of its debut FE season, the Porsche squad is set to operate under a four-person management structure. It uses 800-volt technology, which is similar to the upcoming Taycan road car and drives a permanent synchronous motor.
As per the design, 99X Electric features Porsche’s traditional motorsport colors of white, black, and red. The traditional Porsche motorsport colors were chosen for the Formula E racing car, and even the emblem is clearly visible around the Halo system. The car will serve as a development platform for future fully-electric production models.
The team is ready to have one final session of its private testing program to complete ahead of the three days of official FE pre-season group testing.
