The Chinese giant, Huawei added another feather to its crown with the recent breakthrough of its ultra-high-speed transmission signal. Huawei has become the first company to achieve 220 GBaud ultra-high-speed signal transmission paving the way for applying transmission rates that exceed 1T bit/s per wavelength.
Previously, the highest symbol rate recorded in academic research was 192 GBaud and in a commercial product it is around 95 GBaud for the 800G single wavelength transmission. But now, Huawei holds the record of coming up with the highest signal transmission rate.
This invention will certainly help in exceeding the current wavelength. Increasing the signal symbol rate in the ultra-high-speed fiber optical transmission field is very important for achieving a large-capacity transmission system. As the single-wavelength transmission rate evolves towards 1T bit/s, it requires a transmission system based on a high symbol rate that can deliver better transmission.
Reportedly, Huawei’s Munich optical network Research and Development team generated a high symbol rate signal that went beyond 200 Gbaud for the first time in history. They have used a new high-bandwidth IQ modulator and nonlinear digital signal processing algorithms to achieve such results.
Dr. Maxim Kuschnerov, director of the Optical and Quantum Laboratory in Munich, has said:
Our experiment marks a significant milestone in fibre optical communication research. 10 years after the first generation of coherent optical products based on 28 Giga symbols per second, we were able to scale up the symbol rate by a factor of almost 8, using AI-powered advanced signal processing and the latest high bandwidth components. This will pave the way for future multi-Terabit interfaces for metro and backbone networks.
However, this result is not sudden. The company has invested a lot of time, research, and investment in the ultra-high-speed field and has successfully got multiple achievements in ultra-high-speed optical transmission. In February 2020, Huawei released the industry’s first 800G ultra-high-speed optical module in London and broke the world record by delivering 48 Tbit/s per-fiber speed.
These 800G ultra-high-speed optical modules are now used all across Huawei’s optical transmission products, covering various application scenarios, for example, backbone transmission, metro transmission, data center interconnection, etc.
Huawei’s recent research on ultra-high-speed signal transmission has reached 220 GBaud. They have published their findings in a post-deadline paper (PDP) by Huawei at the European Conference on Optical Communications (ECOC) 2020.
Their solutions are being recognized globally. This Chinese giant aims to boost investment in ultra-high-speed transmission technologies and provide the industry’s largest fiber transmission capability to help customers handle the surging network traffic in the F5G era and create thriving industries in the future.
