Following his ban from payment processing platform, PayPal, the British right-wing reporter Tommy Robinson, whose business is purportedly funded by donations, has wasted no time to turn to Bitcoin as the immediate solution to his problem.
Although without specifying the reasons, PayPal has issued a statement following the ban of the British far-right figurehead, in which they have outlined that, “We do not allow PayPal services to be used to promote hate, violence, or other forms of intolerance that is discriminatory.”
Soon after, Robinson took to Facebook to vent his feelings regarding the development, while also announcing his decision to turn to Bitcoin, the world’s largest censorship-resistant currency, for receiving donations. His Facebook post also contained a Bitcoin address.
“Look at the PayPal Fascists, can’t even explain what exactly I have done that is not in line with their User Agreement. Do they steal our funds for 6 months? Screw Paypal and the establishment if you still want to support me you can do so without Paypal at www.supporttommy.com or using Bitcoin”, reads the post.
A number of supportive comments have been posted on Robinson’s post, with some users claiming to have voluntarily closed their PayPal accounts to show their solidarity with Robinson; and some others claiming that PayPal’s move is being prompted by political motives.
“I’ve closed my account down. The moment any service becomes political is the time to call it a day. 13 years I’ve held an account with them. Closed it down tonight,” reads one of the comments.
Robinson has recently been released from prison on bail after he was arrested for being held in contempt of court charge. Interestingly enough, though, the reporter received almost £20,000 in Bitcoin while he was jailed, all of which came from his ardent supporters.
