Ge Yue, the Apple Vice President and Managing Director of Greater China, had recently delivered a speech at the 2nd ESG Global Leaders Summit. At the Summit, he emphasized the emission factor stating that Apple’s own operational emissions are already carbon neutral.
He further remarked that he pledges to be carbon neutral throughout the life of its products by 2030. This is 20 years earlier than the UN’s 2050 carbon neutrality target. He further iterated that another goal of Apple is to use only recycled or renewable materials to not only create long-lasting products but also to create the recycling rate of materials and work on water management and zero waste in landfills.
Furthermore, Ge Yue talked about some specific areas of work. He spoke about how on Earth Day in April this year, Apple announced that nearly 20% of all materials used in Apple products the preceding year were recycled materials; 213 production partners worldwide have pledged to use 100% renewable energy to produce Apple products. Regarding forest protection, Apple has improved more than 6 million mu of productive forests in China, and the amount of fiber produced is equal to the amount of fiber used in Apple product packaging.
Lastly, he concluded by stating clearly that Apple aims to reduce its environmental impact, develop fair and reasonable solutions, and promote broader changes in the industry and society. He said they are proud of their progress so far and shall continue to harness the power of technology and innovation to protect the planet and promote sustainable development.
