Toyota Motor Corporation announced today that the company is developing a hydrogen engine keeping the environmental concerns in mind. Toyota’s Corolla Sport is the recipient of the engine which is all set to enter the competition under the ORC ROOKIE Racing banner at the Fukushima Hydrogen Energy Research Field in Namie Town, Fukushima Prefecture.

Fuel cell electrified vehicles (FCEVs) such as Toyota’s Mirai use a fuel cell in which hydrogen chemically reacts with oxygen in the air to produce electricity. Hydrogen engines are famous for generating almost zero CO2 when being used save for the combustion of engine oil during driving. Hydrogen engines also come with a promise of good responsiveness due to the fact that it takes less time for combustion than gasoline engines.

Seen from this perspective the initiative taken by the motor company seems like an excellent move. Moreover, this would not be the first time that the automobile manufacturer invested in innovating engine technology. Toyota has also refined the production of vehicles by participating in motorsports. One such example would be the GR Yaris that was launched in September 2020. The company has pledged to further strengthen the safety of its cars, and the drivers by employing the data accumulated through the development of fuel cell vehicles and the commercialization of the Mirai.

However, although Toyota is aiming to expand its hydrogen infrastructure by further promoting hydrogen use for its engines, the automobile manufacturer also wants to develop efforts that will help the company with its economic recovery while also ensuring the revitalization of the Tohoku region.

Other steps taken to guarantee carbon neutrality include the use of hydrogen through the popularization of FCEVs and various other fuel-cell-powered products. Now that Toyota has confirmed that the company is unlikely to scour away from refining its hydrogen-based engine technologies, the company is getting closer to realizing that dream.
