- ARK 2 delay now pushes the survival sequel’s release window to 2027–2028, making it one of the longest-running developments in modern gaming.
- The switch to Unreal Engine 5 significantly impacted ARK 2 development, slowing production due to complex engine integration and new workflows.
- Studio Wildcard’s focus on ARK Survival Ascended redirected resources, affecting player expectations and weakening momentum for ARK 2.
The sequel to ARK: Survival Evolved, initially titled ARK 2 Survival and later simply ARK 2, has recently become one of the most extreme cases of long-term game development and endless delays in the modern-day gaming industry. It was first revealed at The Game Awards 2020, in a very spectacular way, with Vin Diesel, a Hollywood actor, coming on board as a major part of the plot, and thus, the public was quite optimistic about a speedy release.

It was, unfortunately, no surprise that by the end of 2025, the game will not yet be available to players. The timeline has slid several times before; finally, the announcement has been made that it could start no sooner than 2027 or as late as 2028.
The Development Trajectory: Ambition, Engine Switch, and Resource Allocation
One of the main reasons for ARK 2’s postponement has been its ambitious goals and technological advances. The sequel is being developed using Unreal Engine 5, an upcoming-generation platform that promises vast areas to explore, dynamic systems, and more sophisticated AI and physics. Studio Wildcard has said in past communications that the integration of Unreal Engine 5 took longer than they expected and significantly contributed to the schedule change.
Another significant development decision was to divert a large portion of the studio’s workforce to ARK: Survival Ascended, a comprehensive remaster of the original ARK: Survival Evolved, effectively placing ARK 2’s development on the back burner. In interviews, co-founders stated that although a vertical slice of ARK 2 existed, the team chose to use Survival Ascended to master Unreal Engine 5 workflows, refine technical competencies, and generate ongoing revenue.
The Impact on Player Expectations and Franchise Momentum

From a consumer standpoint, the protracted delay has had several direct consequences. First, expectations have been stretched and eroded. Players initially excited by cinematic reveals, particularly those featuring Vin Diesel’s involvement, now confront years without a playable build or substantial gameplay showcase.
Secondly, the continual emphasis on Survival Ascended, though in some ways it is the right thing to do commercially, will, at least in some ways, risk the sequel being totally neglected. Early access and expansions for Survival Ascended keep the franchise alive and attract players, but they also serve as a substitute rather than a supporting role for ARK 2.
Finally, repeated delays can distort the market context in which ARK 2 will ultimately be released. Game design trends evolve rapidly; mechanical paradigms that seemed innovative at announcement may feel dated by launch. Studio Wildcard’s leadership has articulated this concern directly, noting that the team does not want ARK 2 to hit the market feeling “two or three years behind the curve.”
Strategic Trade-offs and Commercial Realities
In the case of ARK 2, we can see the gaming industry’s structural issues reflected. The new, demanding technical aspects of ambitious sequels, such as new engine technology and genre expansions, tend to make the schedule more turbulent.

The survival game that had the most comprehensive features before is now highly complex: one has to deal with issues like ecosystems, multiplayer synchronisation, AI behaviours, and persistent-world logic that require significant engineering effort. Moreover, this complexity is further intensified by cross-platform expectations, the constantly changing community design, and pressure from competitors in the genre who are already there.
From a business standpoint, Wildcard’s decision to promote Survival Ascended points to a degree of risk management: keep the revenue-generating content flowing while gradually acquiring the skills needed for ARK 2, rather than taking an entirely untested pipeline to market. This strategy might keep the franchise’s long-term prospects going, but it definitely takes away the short-term excitement and confusion.
