Firaxis has announced that the next Sid Meier Civilization game is currently in development. It is referred to as the “Next Civ Game,” and given the last game in the series was Civilization VI, this is most likely Civilization 7, although no release date has been provided.
This announcement comes along with the news that Steve Martin, the longstanding studio head who oversaw Marvel’s Midnight Suns and the XCOM series, left after 25 years in order to pursue other opportunities. The studio’s COO, Heather Hazen, will take over Martin’s position as president of the organization. The creative director for Civilization 7 will be Ed Beach, who directed Civilization 6.
Next Civ game in development!
With the news that Firaxis is working on the next Civilization game, Hazen expressed her excitement and promised to take the studio and Civilization series to new heights. She stated, “I’m thrilled to have this opportunity to carry on the studio’s storied legacy, beginning with the announcement that Firaxis is in development on the next iteration of the legendary Civilization franchise”.
Civilization 6 has proved to be a critically acclaimed and financially successful game across all platforms. Even after more than three decades, Firaxis Games upholds Meier’s grand concept for the franchise. Although Civilization 7 will surely improve upon Civilization 6, the fact that fans know precisely what to anticipate from the next game is what keeps them committed to the series.
Even though, no information was provided on the launch window for Civilization 7 or its projected release date. But because the game is already in development, we can expect its announcement or reveal soon. The gameplay of the next game will most likely be similar to that of the previous games in the series. Civilization 7 will undoubtedly be a turn-based 4X strategy game, and it will undoubtedly have new rulers and improved mechanics.
