Self-driving cars are one of the most initiated projects by many renowned companies. Fifty-three companies to date have received permits to test self-driving cars with a safety driver in California. According to recent sources, China-based Didi Chuxing is one more company that is being added to this list.
Didi Chuxing received the permit to test their self-driving cars. Taking a step ahead, this company opened a US-based research lab in March. Didi also partnered with Udacity to host a contest for the development of Automated Safety and Awareness Processing Stack last year.
Apple is another giant that received this permit. With an intention to quicken the process, this company expanded its fleet to include 27 cars. Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi stated that Uber would bring back its self-driving cars within the next few months. Uber’s previous permit already expired on March 31. So if the company wants to continue, it will have to apply for a new permit.
Recently, Department Of Motor Vehicles of California introduced new regulations and permit application processes for self-driving car companies in April. This new system will include three autonomous vehicle options: testing with a driver, driverless testing, and deployment. In order to conduct driverless testing, the companies must have previously tested the vehicles in controlled conditions. With all of the above, the vehicles must also meet the definition of an SAE level 4 and 5 vehicles.
The companies had to follow all the above-mentioned points with deployment, companies must further ensure that cars can detect and respond to roadway situations. The companies must also consider that they meet best practices to detect cyber-attacks and other such threats.
