God of War Ragnarok’s physical boxed sales in the United Kingdom have reportedly overtaken Modern Warfare 2, making it the second highest-selling title of 2022.
First-week boxed sales on the PS5 accounted for 82% of total sales, while sales on the PS4 were only 18%. Though it’s probable that God of War: Ragnarok isn’t exactly second overall because this data only includes physical box sales. Despite a successful history in the UK for the God of War franchise, this milestone is remarkable.
Compared to the first week of sales of any other game in the franchise, God of War Ragnarok had a record-breaking launch day. The game reportedly sold 51% more units in its first week than the previous top-selling title, God of War from 2018. The game presently ranks third among all God of War games in sales after only one week of release.
The digital sales haven’t been taken into consideration yet, but when they are, Modern Warfare 2 will probably surpass Ragnarok. Particularly considering that Activision has already reported that it made $1 billion in its first 10 days of release.
It’s worth noting that FIFA 23 outsold God of War Ragnarok, but it doesn’t necessarily mean anything bad for the franchise. FIFA 23 has been especially highly anticipated because it is the final installment in EA’s venerable football game franchise.
Moreover, while discussing game sales, we cannot neglect the other top contenders on the list along with the God of War Ragnarok. One of the biggest new releases this month is The Sonic FrontiersThe Sega game outsold Sonic Forces by 5% in its first week of sales, however, digital sales will probably increase that number somewhat. Xbox, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, 40%, PS5, 34%, 12%, and Xbox had the most boxed sales.
It would be fascinating to watch whether God of War Ragnarok sales continues to increase and if it overtakes other games as the most successful series.
