Over the past two decades, Huawei has emerged as a pivotal contributor to the evolution of mainstream ICT standards. As a testament to its commitment to innovation, in the year 2022 alone, Huawei remarkably lodged an impressive 4,505 patent applications with the prestigious European Patent Office, firmly securing its position at the helm of innovation and intellectual property. At the same time, the firm has the highest number of patent applications this year between the first quarter and till date.
To continue on this journey of refinements, the Chinese tech giant has recently signed a long-term global patent cross-licensing agreement with Swedish multinational networking and telecommunications firm, Ericsson.
The long-term global patent cross-licensing agreement covers 3GPP, ITU, IEEE, IETF, etc., including 3/4/5G cellular technology. Basic standard patents relating to the selling of terminal equipment and communication network infrastructure. The parties agree to grant each other worldwide licenses to utilize their respective standard patented technologies.

However, he further stated that the firm is committed to sharing leading scientific and technological innovations with the industry, which will promote the long-term and healthy development of the industry and provide consumers with better products and services.
“At the same time, as the obligatee and user of standard essential patents, Huawei insists on balancing the interests of the obligee and user. The conclusion of this agreement reflects Huawei’s reasonable and balanced intellectual property licensing strategy,” – Fan Zhiyong emphasized.
