Huawei to Launch P20 and P20 Plus in March, Hints at Triple Camera Setup

Over the past few weeks, rumors have been rife about Huawei unveiling the P20 series on March 27. The upcoming series is tipped to include the P20, P20 Plus, and P20 Lite that will succeed the P10 series. The first two have been rumored to sport a triple camera setup, which Huawei seemingly has confirmed in the invite sent out to the media. The invite also states that the company will be hosting an event on March 27 in Paris, France.

The invitation that has been sent out features the Eiffel Tower in the background with three circles translucent circles over it. This marketing gimmick is very suggestive of the three camera lenses that will be seen on the back of the Huawei P20 and P20 Plus. The invite also features a tagline- “See more with AI”. It is speculated that the three ora further emphasize the triple camera setup. The AI part of the tagline most refers to the company’s Kirin 970 chipset, which comes with a dedicated Neural Processing Unit that is designed as an AI accelerator. All three P20 smartphones are expected to be powered by the Kirin 970 chipset.

As far as the triple camera setup is concerned, past rumors and leaked images propose that cameras will be placed vertically on the top corner on the back alongside a dual-LED flash. The third camera is expected to offer 5X hybrid zoom. The front of the P20 is tipped to sport a 24-megapixel dual camera setup along with the company’s own facial recognition system. This is set to be ten times more accurate than Apple’s Face ID.

The Huawei P20, P20 Plus, and P20 Lite are all expected to sport edge-to-edge displays with a notch cut out similar to the iPhone X. Much like Apple’s latest iPhone, the notch on the P20 will have the cameras, earpiece and various sensors for facial recognition. The P20 Lite was recently certified by FCC where its schematics suggest that it could feature a 6.1-inch (1080×2280) display with an unconventionally long 19:9 display. The schematics further note that P20 Lite will measure 148x70mm. The phone will most likely have a dual rear camera setup and housing a 2900mAh battery.

Huawei has also confirmed its presence at the MWC 2018 later this month. The company is also expected to announce the release of a few new products that could allegedly include a new Mediapad tablet, Huawei Pay and a successor to the Huawei Watch 2. However, nothing of this sort has been confirmed as of now. Buyers will have to wait until the end of the month to find out what Huawei has in store for them.
