Huawei is Working on a Phone With Zoom Camera and Extra Screen

The Chinese manufacturer Huawei has released surprising phones in recent years. The devices from the Huawei P and Mate series have grown to become one of the most coveted smartphones in a few years. The Huawei P30 series will be revealed later this month. These new high-end telephones receive a noticeably smaller notch than last year, so an even larger screen surface can be realized.

The rear of the Huawei P30 is characterized by a new camera system consisting of three vertically placed cameras. One of these cameras has a periscopic lens, allowing an exceptionally large optical zoom range to be achieved. This Huawei phone is probably equipped with 10x optical zoom, comparable to Oppo’s innovative zoom technology at MWC 2019 last month.

A recently published design patent shows that Huawei is considering developing a mobile phone with a zoom camera. In addition to a periscopic camera lens, this smartphone has another special feature: an extra display is placed directly under the triple camera system.

Huawei patented a smartphone with an extra screen.

The design patent was filed on November 28, 2018, by the law firm Boehmert & Boehmert from Berlin, Germany. The patent was applied for on behalf of Huawei Technologies and was published on 28 February 2019 by the EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office) and the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office), with which this patent enjoys worldwide protection.

Huawei Extra Screen PhoneThe front looks a lot like the expected Huawei P30, although the notch of the patented model is further reduced. It is an almost full-screen design, with a very small recess made for a sensor at the top, in the middle, and probably a Time-of-Flight sensor for 3D face recognition. This sensor is placed halfway through the screen edge so that the notch can be kept very minimal.

The back of this Huawei phone houses a triple camera. The third lens differs from the other two; the square-shaped lens indicates that Huawei wants to use the same periscopic camera system as the P30. However, this model positions the cameras horizontally rather than vertically. A flash and a laser autofocus system are to the left of the three cameras.

The most remarkable thing about this mobile phone is the extra screen. An almost square screen is placed directly below the triple camera. An ideal display for taking selfies. This makes it possible to take high-quality portrait photos with the advanced camera system on the back. Quite cleverly conceived by the engineers at Huawei.

A display on the back of a smartphone is not entirely new. For example, the Vivo NEX Dual Display was released at the end of last year; this device is also equipped with a second display. With this model, however, it was decided not to place a front camera at all on the front in order to create a full-screen design.

The Vivo phone is also equipped with face recognition, which goes through the back display. Judging by the notch, Huawei seems to choose to maintain the face recognition function at the front.

The new Mate 30 smartphones will be introduced in the year’s second half. It is possible that Huawei intends to apply the patented design for its new Mate devices. There is a good chance that the Chinese manufacturer will release a Huawei phone with a slider camera before that time.
