After announcing the details about the new Power10 family of processors, IBM finally announced the launch of the Power10 E1080 Servers, and most of the servers are aimed at cloud services. The E1080 is the first system that can support metering by the minute for both Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Red Hat OpenShift.

The new Power10 processor comes with a 602mm2 16 core silicon die running at over 4 GHz with eight threads per core, and some reports claim that a full 16 socket system can run to 1920 logical threads. The new processor can either be a single chip module (or SCM) or a dual-chip module (DCM).

Steve Sibley, vice president of project management for IBM Power, said in a statement, “IBM is more integrated than ever before in our strategy and how we’re working together, building on this Red Hat platform side of things and the ability to sell more capability to our customers to enhance what they have – it’s really a great opportunity for our customers.”

IBM claims that the new series of servers comes with major security enhancements and Red Hat hybrid cloud capabilities. This only means that the servers can respond faster to business demands while also protecting the data from core to cloud. A report shows that Power 10 has four times the number of encryption engines per core when compared to IBM’s last Power9 servers; Power10 delivers 2.5 times faster performance for AES encryption.

During its release, the company stressed time and again “instant scaling, pay per use consumption,” which is a part of IMB’s ‘Hybrid Cloud’ strategy. However, IBM did not mention details regarding the SKUs, and memory options and did not mention if these will be available for direct purchase.

IBM said that they are expecting to start shipping before the end of this month.
