LG Electronics, the South Korean multinational electronics company, launched the LG V50 ThinQ and the G8 ThinQ at the MWC 2019 this Sunday.
A dual-screen 5G smartphone, the LG V50 ThinQ, uses the existing V40 platform and comes with a second 6.2-inch OLED display which is similar to a case that attaches itself to the primary screen. The dual-screen uses V50’s internal 4,000mAh battery to power itself.
The two screens work independently, and the second screen will enable users to multitask, like browsing the internet on one screen and watching a video on the other. However, it doesn’t seem like content or apps can be stretched across both screens.
Though more details about the dual screen are not yet available, it is known that the screen locks into place at the angles of 104 and 180 degrees.
LG also unveiled the new G8 ThinQ, which claims to comprise superb video and audio quality. The G8 ThinQ has the feature where the phone could be unlocked without touching the screen through light sensors that would scan the veins in a user’s hands or scan a user’s face to do the job.
The smartphone makes use of Germany’s Infineon Technologies-developed sensor chip to enable the front camera scan in 3D, thereby providing more secure biometric unlocking of smartphones.
According to LG product evangelist David Montanya, this feature would be ‘harder to spoof’ thanks to the scant possibility of two people having the same vein structure in their hands.
What’s more, hand gestures for particular controls can be activated, such as twisting fingers to play, pause media, or adjust volume, just like Tom Cruise’s character had done in the science-fiction detective thriller ‘Minority Report.’
In an effort to revive sales slumps, LG brought out these two smartphones to compete with major rivals such as Xiaomi and Huawei, who have previously outshone LG in market share.
There has been no announcement regarding pricing and release dates for the two new smartphones, but it is expected that they will be available in stores, globally, sometime in the first half of the year.
