As per the latest reports, South Korea’s LG Chemical is going to be the sole manufacturer of the iPhone 9 batteries. According to the report published in The Korean Economic Daily, Apple, which is going to release the device next year, has partnered with LG for the supply of batteries for the devices.>
Apple has always used a multiple vendor policy; shifting to a single vendor for batteries is big news. As per the report, LG has invested a sizable amount in matching the capacity of Apple’s requirement. Production of the batteries is expected to commence early in 2018.
A Korean reporter was quoted as saying that LG has invested billions of Korean Won in starting the facility for battery production. There are plans to start the battery production on a mass scale by early next year. The reports also added that the new iPhone would have a ‘bent’ in the bottom, so the batteries are going to be ‘L-Shaped.’
As soon as the news broke out, shares of LG Chemical went up by 1.07% and stand at 329,500 Korean Won. The L-shaped battery is also expected to be present in the iPhone 8, which is slated to release this year. It is reported that the new design will make the charging speed of the device way faster.
Neither Apple nor LG have confirmed the news as of yet.
