Today, February 26, as MWC 2018 kicked off in Fira de Barcelona, MediaTek announced the Helio P60, the brand’s newest mobile application processor. A series of improvements was implemented over its predecessor, achieving completion with new hardware and tools.

The implementations aim at supporting the ascending market of AI and machine learning. The announcement parallels MediaTek’s focus on mid-tier markets instead of the expensive premium end. The brand has been catering to this for its Helio X series.

Among dedicated AI hardware that are first priorities for the MediaTek chip is the multi-core mobile APU (AI processing unit). The release and the brand’s website didn’t yet reveal details on its capabilities. It is apparently a fusion of CPU and GPU rather than AMD’s APU and is twice as efficient as GPU in machine learning aspects.

The platform supports several common AI frameworks for developers: TensorFlow Lite, Caffe, Caffe 2, and Neuropilot SDK of MediaTek that’s compatible with Android Networks API by the second quarter of the year, the support for ONNX will be added as well. CorePilot 4.0 technology and EAS (Energy Aware Scheduling) of MediaTek are incorporated with the APU for the comfortable running of devices according to thermal limits.

MediaTek Helio P60 furthermore packs big.LITTLE octa-core configuration. The performance improvements scale up to 70% of CPU and GPU aspects compared to its predecessors. This is possible because of bigger CPU cores and the updated GPU. 12% better efficiency in terms of CPU in comparison with Helio P23 and 25% energy saving for energy-demanding games are other highlights of the MediaTek chip.

Powering dual camera setups, the chip gets you three improved image signal processors with 18% more energy efficiency. Last but not the least, it supports 4G LTE worldwide modem, dual VoLTE support, and TAS 2.0 smart antenna software.

MediaTek said that the smartphones packing this chip will be available in global markets starting the early Q2 of the year. Stay with us to get more updates on MediaTek’s innovations and the MWC 2018.
