Netflix has started testing an affordable subscription plan for users in India. The California-based company has now begun presenting at Rs 250 subscription plan as an entry-level streaming plan for mobile-only users in the country.

With the low-cost plan, the video streaming service, Netflix wants to compete with other video streaming services in India like Hotstar, Amazon Prime Video, ALT Balaji, and Zee5, among others. With the low-cost plan, Netflix wants to strengthen its user base in the country.

A Netflix spokesperson has confirmed that the app will be in trials in selected countries where members can watch Netflix on their smartphone at a lower subscription fee in shorter increments of time. However, not everyone will see these options, and the company might never roll out these specific plans beyond the tests are finally successful.

As of November last year, Netflix announced that it has 50 million users in the US and around 137 million subscribers globally. Last year Netflix announced that the company aims to add approximately 100 million subscribers from India alone. Maybe the company wants to achieve this goal by introducing a low-cost plan.

India is a crucial market for Netflix, which opened an office in Mumbai last year. It has commissioned 12 series and 12 movies in India so far. India’s online video market is expected to grow from $700 million in 2018 to $2.4 billion by 2023.
