During a panel discussion, Netflix announced a new game effort tied to ‘Stranger Things’ and ‘The Dark Crystal’. Netflix made its presence known at gaming conference E3 this year. The company, known for its streaming video service, is getting its toes wet with video games. It’s just one of the ways it’s trying to expand beyond its roots.
The third season of Stranger Things hits the streaming platform on July 4, and the accompanying console game will be available on that same day in digital-only from across the major gaming platforms. The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics will follow later this year, timed to the release of the rebooted Jim Henson fantasy property.
Netflix is starting with its new venture to explore the possibility of turning its movies and TV shows into other products, and starting with “Stranger Things”. The show is one of the service’s most popular show in the U.S. and among younger viewers. The company had licensed a “Stranger Things” mobile game in 2017 and has since have done deals for “Stranger Things” promoting with T-shirts, Coca-Cola bottles and ice cream. A new mobile game will debut in 2020.
Industrywide, video games sales have topped earning $40 billion last year. That’s more than consumers spend on movie tickets. Netflix is in all plan to target video games’ audiences and hence will be available on most of the major gaming consoles, as well as personal computers.
