Not weeks after BlackBerry signed an agreement with India’s Optiemus Infracom to license its security software, services suite, and related brand assets, Evan Blass has given Twitteratis a sneak peek of what the product of the joint venture may look like.
Going by the name of BlackBerry Ghost, the smartphone has been defined as “a bezel-less premium Android handset”, to be launched in India soon. After working with BlackBerry to bring KEYone to India, this seems to be Optiemus’s next flagship meant specifically for the Indian market.
Optiemus Infracom, one of the three organizations with the license to build BlackBerry-branded handsets across various regions, along with TCL/BlackBerry Mobile and BB Merah Putih; has been endowed with the responsibility of manufacturing, designing, promoting, and selling BlackBerry-branded mobile devices to customers across the Indian subcontinent.
Our exclusive partnership with BlackBerry, a brand synonymous with secure mobile communications, shows how we are continuing to partner and innovate to bring the latest in handset design and experience, combining the security of BlackBerry and versatility of Android, to our customers in the world’s fastest growing smartphone market. – Ashok Gupta, Chairman of Optiemus Infracom Ltd.
For his part, Alex Thurber, Senior Vice President, General Manager, Mobility Solutions at BlackBerry, has said, “With its infrastructure and experience in manufacturing, and proven success as our distribution partner, Optiemus Infracom Ltd is the ideal partner to design and manufacture trusted BlackBerry secure Android handsets for customers in India and neighboring markets. India is a very important market for BlackBerry, so we are delighted our latest licensing partnership will extend the BlackBerry software experience to more customers and support the Indian government’s ‘Make In India’ agenda.”
The latest tweeted image of the BlackBerry Ghost seems to be a realization of the aforementioned statements. Although no specs or added information is yet available for the device, its sleek, apparently metal body and bezel-less display make it a device to watch out for.
