Sony will soon release the PSVR 2 VR headset, but users will be unable to play PSVR games on the new device. Hideaki Nishino recently discussed PS VR2’s development and reaffirmed that previous titles won’t work with the new headgear on an episode of the official PlayStation podcast. This implies that there won’t be any backwards compatibility with PSVR games on the PSVR 2.

Games for PSVR on PSVR 2 are not backwards compatible

According to Hideaki Nishino, “PSVR games are not compatible with PSVR2 since PSVR2 is meant to give a truly next-generation VR experience.” Backwards compatibility won’t be included in Sony’s new PS5-exclusive headset, despite early reviews of the PSVR2 praising a wide range of capabilities and the entire quality of the gaming experience.

Yasuo Takahashi and Kenjo Akiyama from Sony Interactive Entertainment discussed the hardware and specifications of the PSVR2 in recent months, adding that the overall design should simplify it to adapt titles from rival VR headsets to the PSVR2.

Nishino highlighted the advanced features of PSVR2 that possess over PSVR, including inside-out tracking, eye tracking, support for 4K HDR, and a redesigned controller with haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. Furthermore,  Nishino added, “creating games for PSVR2 involves a completely different strategy than making games for PSVR.”

Since PSVR 2’s tracking technology is entirely different from PSVR’s tracking system, games would necessitate either being updated for the new system or using a universal interpreter to work with it.

It’s currently unknown when the PlayStation VR2 will really be available. So yet, PlayStation has only specified an early 2023 release date. A number of titles have already been confirmed to be developed for the device. However, the device’s specs have already been made public. It is now already known that games created for the PlayStation VR headset of the first generation will not work with the PlayStation VR2. The entire podcast is available on the Playstation’s official website.
