Qualcomm today presented the LTE 9205 multimode modem, designed for the next generation of Internet of Things (IoT) products and services that will support the innovative 5G network. The keyword is a reduction. The new modem, in fact, has dimensions equal to 14.7 x 15.3 mm compared to 21.8 x 19.2 mm of the predecessor MDM 9206 and should have a reduced energy consumption that could reach up to 70% less. Added to this is the cost of the individual components, which should fall by 40%.

Qualcomm 9205 LTE modem is based on the Cortex A7 processor and supports ThreadX real-time operating systems and AliOs Things. The greater efficiency of the connectivity instead is ensured by the Cat M1 technology (eMTC), with voice support, and the Cat-NB2 designed to allow device manufacturers to optimize costs and energy.

The combination of these two technologies with the addition of E-GPRS and the extension of the support of the 450MHz to 2.1Ghz frequency range (up to 23 global bands) will allow OEMs to develop functioning products worldwide. Finally, as regards the various global navigation satellite systems, in the Qualcomm 9205, there are GPS, Glonass, BeiDou, and Galileo.

With the growing importance of the Internet of Things on a global level and with the approach of the 5G’s actual debut, the company does not want to be caught unprepared. This new solution will allow us to grasp even the slightest possibility of creating a market around this kind of products.

Among the innovations, we find the greatest compactness while maintaining the complete product in terms of industrial design. Compared to the MDM9206, Qualcomm 9205 LTE is 50% smaller and consumes 70% less allowing easier integration into the IoT.

The Qualcomm 9205 LTE modem integrates an RF transceiver with an extended frequency band of 450 MHz to 2100 MHz. It also includes a complete RF front-end – a solution that is currently unique in the sector of IoT devices – which it allows to accelerate the design and certification of products using the new modem (with benefits in terms of reducing the time needed for processing).
