Today, the South Korean multinational electronics corporation has unveiled an automotive semiconductor chip that delivers a 5G network connectivity for in-vehicle infotainment services for the first time in the industry.

The new telematics management unit for automobiles seeks to transmit vital information to a vehicle in real-time via high-speed download, having speeds of up to 5.1 gigabits per second. According to the South Korean tech giant, through 5G-based car connectivity, passengers will be able to experience high-definition content streaming services and video conversations, according to Samsung.

The new chip can run in standalone and non-standalone modes, allowing it to work with 5G and long-term evolution infrastructure. It is currently in mass production, but Samsung has refused to reveal who its customers are.

The unit also has two Cortex-A55 Central Processing Unit cores from Arm, a semiconductor design firm based in the United Kingdom, as well as a built-in global navigation satellite system, allowing increased telematics applications to track and monitor cars remotely.

The Exynos Auto T5123 is one of three new logic processors announced by Samsung, promising faster data transmission, safer in-vehicle infotainment performance, and more dependable connected car operation.

Exynos Auto V7, a processor for in-vehicle entertainment systems mounted on mid-to-high-end vehicles, joins Samsung Electronics’ automotive brand processor portfolio for a more immersive in-car experience, alongside Exynos Auto T5123.

According to Samsung, the imaging system in the Exynos Auto V7 delivers pixel correction, dynamic range compression, and geometric distortion correction for noiseless and distortion-free images used in functions such as surround view and parking assistance.

The new processor will also enable numerous systems at the same time, resulting in safer operation by preventing automobile domains from interfering with each other. The Exynos Auto V7 is being used in Volkswagen’s latest in-car application-server 3.1 that was developed by LG Electronics’ vehicle component solutions division.

The new logic chips will help the company meet the rising demand for automotive chip technology solutions. In early November, market research firm IHS Markit predicted that the global market for automotive semiconductors will reach $67.6 billion by 2026, up from roughly $40 billion by the end of 2020.

Speaking about the new chip, Jae-hong, the executive vice president of System LSI Custom SOC Business at Samsung Electronics, said:

“Smarter and more connected automotive technologies for enriched in-vehicle experiences including entertainment, safety, and comfort are becoming critical features on the road.”

“With an advanced 5G modem, an AI-enhanced multi-core processor, and a market-proven power management integrated circuit solution, Samsung is transfusing its expertise in mobile solutions into its automotive lineup and is positioned to expand its presence within the field.” He added.
