Samsung is Developing a Super Lens That is Much Thinner Than Traditional Lenses

Samsung Electronics is reportedly developing something called the Super lens. The lens looks like a flat structure upon which there are nanoparticles. The lens will follow the principle similar to that of the Fresnel lens; however, the precision for this lens is much higher, and the lens is thinner in design.

The South Korean tech giant is hoping that developing this lens will also help them design thinner smartphones than the ones available on the market. At the Nano Korea 2021 conference in Seoul, Lee Shi-woo, Senior Vice President and Director of Corporate Research Institute of Samsung Electronics, mentioned that the smartphone giant is currently trying to apply this technology to production.

The person in charge of Samsung Electro-Mechanics said, “For 0603 MLCC (0.6mm horizontally and 0.3mm vertically), Samsung Electro-Mechanics uses 0.47-micrometer dielectric particle and 100-nanometer powders. It is aiming to thin out the dielectric particle to 0.36 micrometer by 2022 and to 0.30 micrometer by 2025. It is aiming to downsize the powers into double-digit nanometer size. In turn, it is aiming to increase the capacitor’s capacity to 60.4uF from the current 28.6uF.”

A Chinese company with name Shenzhen MetalenX Technology Co., Ltd. is also working on the design, manufacturing, and application of ultra-lens. As per the company, the lens has to be mass-produced using semiconductor chip technology. The designing and developing process for the superlens is different from that of traditional lenses for obvious reasons. One advantage of manufacturing the superlens is that its production aligns with high productivity while also dropping costs after mass production.

The super lens is supposed to be smaller and thinner than traditional lenses, so whatever product uses the super lens, its overall weight would be reduced. At present, the superlens produced by the company can support far-infrared, near-infrared, and visible light.
